Surgical treatment of hallux valgus deformity
1. Soft tissue correction
- Release of the medial capsule of the first metatarsophalangeal joint: release of the capsule from the inside of the thumb joint.
- Thumb adductor attachment release: cutting off the attachment of the muscle leading the thumb to the foot.
- Fasciotomy of the plantar fascia: dissection of the fascia at the sole of the foot.
2. Osteotomies (crossing of bones)
- Flexor osteotomy of the first metatarsal joint: the intersection of the sphenoid bone under the base of the thumb to change its angle.
- Lateral osteotomy of the thumb (chevron osteotomy): thumb crossing to eliminate the deviation and correct the deformity.
- Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint: fixation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint to prevent movement and correct deformity.
3. Arthroplasty (joint replacement)
- Replacement of the first metatarsophalangeal joint: replacement of the damaged joint with an artificial implant.
4. Osteosynthesis (bone fixation)
- Corrective osteotomy of the talus-navicular joint: the intersection of the bones of the ankle joint to change their position.
- Heel wedge: Adding a bone wedge to the heel area to straighten the foot.
The choice of surgical procedure depends on the degree of deformity, concomitant conditions, age and lifestyle of the patient. The surgeon will recommend the most appropriate procedure based on the patient's assessment.
