Prolotherapy is an injection therapy used to treat chronic pain in muscles, ligaments, and tendons. It involves injecting a solution that causes inflammation into the painful areas. Inflammation stimulates the body's natural healing processes, leading to strengthening of the affected tissues and reducing pain.
The solution used in prolotherapy usually contains a substance called dextrose (glucose). When dextrose is injected into the affected area, it causes an inflammatory reaction. Inflammation attracts white blood cells to the damaged tissues, which begin the healing process.
Inflammation also stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for the production of collagen, the main protein of connective tissue. The new collagen helps strengthen and repair damaged tissues.
Prolotherapy can be used to treat various conditions, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Headaches
- Knee and shoulder pain
- Tennis Elbow
- Golf Elbow
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendon
Before the procedure, the doctor will clean the skin at the injection site and perform local anesthesia. The prolotherapy solution is then injected into the painful area using a thin needle.
The number of injections required for each treatment varies depending on the patient's condition. It usually requires 3 to 6 injections with an interval of several weeks.
Studies have shown that prolotherapy can be an effective treatment for chronic pain. One study found that prolotherapy significantly reduced pain and improved function in tennis elbow patients. Another study showed that prolotherapy was effective in treating tension headaches.
Prolotherapy is usually a safe procedure, but some side effects are possible, including:
- Pain and swelling at the injection site
- Bruises
- Temporary exacerbation of pain
Prolotherapy is not recommended for people with certain conditions, such as:
- Active infection
- Blood clotting disorder
- Immunodeficiency
It is important to consult with a qualified doctor to determine if prolotherapy is right for you.
