ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a modern laser vision correction technique designed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. ReLEx SMILE differs from other methods such as LASIK in that the procedure is performed using only a Femtosecond laser, which makes it more gentle and predictable.

The ReLEx SMILE procedure involves the creation of a thin layer of tissue (lenticle) inside the cornea using laser exposure. The surgeon then creates a small window (incision) to remove the lenticulum, which corrects vision indicators. The incision is very small (usually less than 4 mm), which reduces the risk of complications after surgery.

The benefits of ReLEx SMILE include:

  1.  Minimal corneal incision: Since the procedure requires only a small incision, the cornea is less susceptible to deformation, which is important to maintain its stability.
  2.  Less dry eyes: Because ReLEx SMILE retains more nerve endings in the cornea compared to LASIK, many patients experience less dry eye sensation.
  3.  Fewer risks of complications: Due to the fact that the procedure is less invasive, patients have less risk of inflammation, corneal valve detachment and other complications after surgery.

Like any surgical procedure, ReLEx SMILE has its own risks and requires careful selection and preparation. Patients should consult with a specialist to determine the appropriate method of vision correction in each specific case.
