Canthoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to change the shape or position of the lateral canthus of the eye. The lateral canthus is the outer corner of the eye where the upper and lower eyelids meet.

Indications for cantoplasty:

  •  Drooping eyelid (ptosis): Canthoplasty can be used to lift the drooping upper eyelid.
  •  Eye roundness: Canthoplasty can make the eyes more almond-shaped, which improves the aesthetic appearance.
  •  Lower Eyelid drooping (ectropion): Canthoplasty can help tighten the lower eyelid and eliminate ectropion.
  •  Lower Eyelid inversion (entropion): Canthoplasty can help to turn out the lower eyelid, which eliminates entropion.
  •  Other cosmetic purposes: Canthoplasty can be used to improve eye symmetry or change the overall shape of the face.

There are two main types of canthoplasty:

  •  Lateral Canthopexy: In this procedure, the lateral canthus is pulled up and attached to a nearby bone to raise the eyelid.
  •  Lateral Canthotomy: In this procedure, the lateral canthuses are cut and then stitched together to lengthen the ocular fissure.

Cantoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision in the lateral canthus and separates the skin from the underlying tissues. Then they perform the necessary procedure (cantopexy or cantotomy) depending on the desired result. After that, the wound is sutured and a bandage is applied.

Recovery from canthoplasty usually takes several weeks. At this time, patients should avoid strenuous activities and protect their eyes from the sun. The sutures are usually removed after 5-7 days.

Possible complications of canthoplasty include:

  •  The bleeding
  •  Infection
  •  Scarring
  •  Changing the shape of the eye slit
  •  The need for repeated surgery

Results:

The results of canthoplasty are usually long-lasting. Lifting the eyelid can improve the patient's eyesight and give him a more youthful and cheerful appearance. Cosmetic results can boost self-confidence and improve the overall quality of life.
